Since the inception of COMPRO-II in 2012, we have organized three annual meetings of the project steering advisory committee (SAC) to evaluate project progress and identify areas that require adjustment. The meetings were held in Naivasha (Kenya), Kumasi (Ghana), and Debrezeit (Ethiopia). It is worth mentioning that the inception workshop was held in Zanzibar (Tanzania). To facilitate the interaction between the SAC members and the project partners, the SAC meetings have always been an opportunity for the overall work planning based on the feedback from SAC. Project partners include mainly objective leaders and project students in each project country.
The recent SAC and planning meeting was held in Ethiopia in 2015. Major recommendations were made for project adjustment to focus on the most critical areas based on the project vision of success and available budget. The establishment of functional regulatory mechanisms for bio-fertilizers and the capacity building for the national systems to ensure adequate enforcement of the regulatory frameworks were given the highest priority. This includes, but not limited to, quality control in the laboratory, field testing for efficacy, product safety, proper product labeling, and marketplace surveillance. This requires appropriate technical and human capacity. It was consequently recommended to reduce the focus on dissemination campaigns. The work plans developed during the meeting and finalized during in-country meetings did reflect the adjustment. This year (2016), the same recommendations have been followed.
